For this SLO, I had to learn what "appropriate technologies" means in the context of libraries, as it has two meanings. The first is the "appropriate" use of technologies, meaning that the technology used for the project/assignment/etc was the most appropriate technology. An example would be using an external microphone to record an interview, as opposed to just using your smartphone. The other meaning is the use of appropriate technologies to remove barriers to information, creating more equitable access to information and technologies. An example would be the push towards open-access and open-source software and databases (such as Omeka and Wikipedia), which allow for anyone to use the technologies, regardless of access to funding.
I have two such examples. The first would be that for my independent study, I am putting my digitized photographs on to Omeka, creating a collection. It's a work in progress, but I decided to put the collection there because of the problems associated with having a professional collection on Content DM [Edit, 2018, student Content DM collections are no longer available]. I also chose Omeka because it is open-source and open-access, which means that my collection won't be deleted because of storage issues.
My Independent Study blog is through Wordpress. I chose to use WordPress over Blogger because photographs show up better in WordPress than they do in Blogger. This is also the reason why my audio-visual collection for Seminar in Special Collections was in WordPress (Billy's Fiddle's). the images and video show up better. I also put the images in Flickr and the videos in YouTube, so that there would be a bit of a back-up.
